No need to use mouse to control GUI elements on screen. Your eyes are more than sufficient to replace your mouse. According to BBC story, “Computers of the future could be controlled by eye movements, rather than a mouse or keyboard. Scientists at Imperial College, London, are working on eye-tracking technology that analyses the way we look at things.”

Last Sunday I was at my friends’ home. During our discussion we talked about PC security subject. Question was – how do you I know, how secure is my PC from hackers or intruders?

If you are a sys admin or if you visit site such as Slashdot / digg everyday you know how to secure home pc. What about average user?

Not to worry. There is free online tool that can check your basic security and vulnerabilities. It generates reports about your PC.

Coming soon new Apple Leopard OS

Apple is planning to release a new OS called Apple Leopard OS. Apple claims that its upcoming operating system is faster and slick.

Currently Microsoft is struggling with Vista schedule and competition from both OS X and Linux desktop.

According to Mercury news, The Redmond, Wash., software giant was working on its long-awaited next-generation Windows operating system, Vista, known then as “Longhorn.” During Apple’s annual developer’s conference in San Francisco, when its Tiger operating system was unveiled, the company jabbed at its mighty competitor with posters that read: “Redmond, start your photocopiers,” Introducing Longhorn and `Redmond, we have a problem.’

Changing the Windows XP startup picture aka splash screen (boot screen)

You can change the picture that appears on the Windows XP startup screen (also know as splash screen). No need to use default boot screen. It is nice to see new picture or just to impress your friend.

Windows 98 and Windows Millennium (ME) end of support

Windows-98 End of support

Finally Microsoft has announced 11th July as end of support for Windows 98 and ME operating systems.

From Microsoft official page, “…July 11, 2006 will bring a close to Extended Support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me as part of the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft will retire public and technical support, including security updates, by this date…”

It means you need to upgrade your version to Windows XP. And if you are using old computer like P1,P2, you better contact your hardware vendor too ;)

So if you want to change the welcome banner that users see when they FTP into their web site on your Windows based server. Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager allows you to change the welcome banner for FTP server.

How do I change FTP banner?

  • Login as admin
  • Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager
  • Expand FTP sites (from tree view)
  • Right-click on the particular FTP site, select Properties
  • Click on the Messages tab
  • Setup new message
  • Save the changes
  • You can test the changes with ftp command. Type the ftp command as follows:

ftp ftp.your-site.com
ftp. your-windows-server-ip
