Microsoft has published list of 10 tips for improving wireless network performance:
If Windows ever notifies you about a weak signal, it probably means your connection isn’t as fast or as reliable as it could be. Worse, you might lose your connection entirely in some parts of your home. If you’re looking to improve the signal for your wireless network, try some of these tips for extending your wireless range and improving your wireless network performance.
PDF (Portable Document Format ) format is already optimized and he de facto standard for document publishing on the internet and other media.
A PDF file is often a combination of vector graphics, text, and raster graphics. The basic types of content in a PDF are:
* text stored as such * vector graphics for illustrations and designs that consist of shapes and lines * raster graphics for photographs and other types of image
Because all graphics and other stuff PDF file is optimized. You can use program such as Winzip or 7-Zip (or command line utility winzip/zip) to package and compress a pdf file. My personal experience shows that you will not gain much benefit from compressing a PDF file as compression ratio is very small.
I’d be interested to hear if you have other software program to consider when compressing a PDF (remember it must provide a good compression).
What steps should be taken when upgrading an operating system from Windows 98 to Windows XP?
The first and most important step is backup your data to Pen drive, DVD or external hard disk. You should backup a] Your emails and settings b] Your Browser bookmarks and settings c] Your documents and other personal files
This step-by-step article describes how to prepare to upgrade from Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition to Microsoft Windows XP. The information in this article may be useful to help you avoid some common upgrade-related issues.
The effective mac user blog has posted 11 ways to optimize Mac’s performance.
For example it suggests use of utilities such as OnyX which can repair and optimize Mac computer system.
From the article:
Every now and then, my Macs begin to feel a little sluggish. There are many potential reasons why: I tend to run 8-10 applications all the time – and sometimes push 15 or more. This alone will bog down any Mac.
At other times, I realize that it’s been weeks since I restarted the computer, and a simple restart will solve a lot of these woes.
When those don’t speed things up, I’ve found a number of things I can do to encourage my Macs back to their youthful snappiness.
This blog post from Chet Haase describes in detail what has been done to make the Java platform run well on Vista.
From the post: Nope. The rumor is not true; we actually work great on Vista. (The rumor about Larry, on the other hand…). In fact, we have been tuned into this release and making Java work on it since it was named after a breed of cattle. Between regular calls with Microsoft, interaction with their engineers when problems or questions arose, and regular testing and engineering during Vista’s development, we have been building a rock-solid release of Java for Vista.
So how did this bizarre rumor originate? Well, older versions of Java do have problems on Vista, and that’s what the original report was about; someone tried running some older version of Java on Vista and noted some problems. But that’s like saying that your favorite XBox game, Bloody Mess X, doesn’t work on XBox360. Of course it doesn’t; the original game was written for a completely different system. Why should you expect it to work out of the [x]box on this new platform? Presumably, given the popularity of Bloody Mess X, the developers are working on a port of the game to the new console (“Even more blood!”), so you will still be able to run your favorite game on this new system.
Water, coffee, tea and soda are among your laptop’s worst enemies. Just a little bit of such a liquid on your laptop keyboard can damage or destroy your machine or cause you to lose data.
The best way to prevent damage from a mix of liquid and electronics is to keep them as far apart as possible. Keep your laptop far away from cups of coffee, glasses of water, and cans of soda. But in read life it is not possible.
The Kernel Memory Space Analyzer is a tool to help expert debugging engineers analyze Windows crash dump files.
From the site: Debugging Windows system crashes can be a highly daunting task. A high level of expertise is generally required to properly classify and diagnose all but the simplest problems. Significant time can be expended simply getting to the point where the symptom of the problem is determined, let alone the point where the actual cause is understood. In addition, analysis procedures are often repetitive and prone to guesswork.
Kernel Memory Space Analyzer (Kanalyze) is a tool to help expert debugging engineers by performing heuristics analysis of kernel memory space. The Kanalyze identifies a broad range of kernel space data items in the crash dump by;
categorizing the data items into the data types for modeling purposes
locating the data items into the Kanalyze Type Namespace hierarchy
identifying and reporting anomalous conditions by validating the data items and the relationships among them?
