A hard disk (also known as HD or HDD) drive is common data storage for computers. Hard disks use magnets to store information. So who invented hard disk?
The hard disk was invented on September 13, 1956 by IBM team led by Rey Johnson (considered as “father” of the disk drive). Earlier hard disk drives were large and cumbersome devices. A 5 or 20 megabyte hard disk capacity was considered large in early 70 and 80’s.
There are several different types of interface for hard drives. The most common is the IDE or SATA interface, which is found on most home desktop PC’s.
For high-end applications and business the SCSI or SAS interface is very popular. Again, there are several types of SCSI interface. In order to safeguard against data loss or corruption and to improve performance you need to use RAID (there are many different configurations to choose from).
Did you know?
- 1980 – The world’s first gigabyte-capacity disk drive, the IBM 3380, was the size of a refrigerator, weighed 550 pounds (250 kg), and had a price tag of US $40,000.
- 1991 – 100 (2.5-inch) megabyte hard drive introduced.
- 2005 – First 500 GB hard drive started shipping
- 2008 – Seagate announced the first 1.5 terabyte hard drive

this is a useful info!
great asset for the students
Very useful for students like me studying Diploma of IT
helpful tom know interesting facts like dis
more info – the hard drive works as a digital storage medium for the computer
to hook up a hard drive, orient it in a safe position and the connect the power and sata cable
thats all you need to know to make it work
This is really good and right info…
But tell me the First hard disk drive capacity.
I never knew this info. because I’m not a tech person. In fact, my hard drive died and I didn’t have a back up drive so all the files and photos (mostly of my kids) were lost! I took it to the data recovery tech. but unable to retrieve the photos. I was browsing through the internet to find out who invented the hard drive. If someone invented it, then they should know how to fix it. I’m devastated.
it is very helpful for me. yesterday i dont no who invented and when and where of hd. but i know
Very imp infrmation ..
it is very useful info 2all computerization students
Very useful inf I like it very much thanx google
thank u google….
the first hard drive capacity was 3.75Megabites then in 1961 it depended on how many platters was in the box upto a max of 205MB
