World's first 2.5" SCSI hard drive with platters spinning at 15,000k

Seagate has announced a 2.5″ SCSI hard drive that spins at an amazing 15,000RPM :D

From the article:
Today Seagate announces the latest addition to its Savvio line, and this one’s rather special. The new Savvio 15K is not only the world’s first 2.5″ hard drive with platters spinning at 15,000 RPM, Seagate also says it’s 10% faster than 3.5″ 15K-RPM drives, making it the world’s fastest hard drive. That’s a bold claim to make, but the drive’s 2.5″ form factor could actually help it on this front. Even with perpendicular recording, Seagate can only squeeze 36GB onto the Savvio 15K’s platters.

Server Computer Configuration for an Internet Service Provider (ISP)

Here is a quick question from one of our reader:

What sort of computer should you buy for an ISP? We need a computer for mailing, hosting customer sites and running games like Quake. We are small startup ISP.

For mailing and webhosting need you need to purchase a dedicated server. You can build one for yourself (a whitebox) or order from Dell and other vendors. A minimum suggested configuration:

Web server
=> Dual Intel XEON or AMD Dual core processor

=> RAID 5 1/2 TB disk space

=> 4 GB Ecc RAM

=> Linux or FreeBSD UNIX operating system
This web server can handle shared hosting load. You can use same configuration computer for mailing with anti spam and anti virus software.

For gaming you can get a Dual core Intel / AMD CPU with lods of RAM and fast hard disks.

Remember an ISP server mean lots of services such as a Firewall, Web, FTP, RADIUS server etc. You should also consider operating system and your own level of handling the same. You can also purchase 3rd party game and management control panel. Basically you need to do good research before making a final decision.

IBM to introduce faster memory for mobile devices

Researchers at IBM, Macronix and Qimonda are hoping their new phase-change random access memory (PC-RAM) will take over from the Flash memory widely deployed for non-volatile memory in mobile consumer devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras, PDAs and MP3 players.

The new alloy, a ‘doped germanium-antimony’, could run as much as 500 times faster than conventional Flash-based memory. Be a whole new world for portable storage devices. And we may see a real-world prototype as early 2008.

From the article:
Working at two IBM labs on the east and west coasts of the USA, the scientist produced prototype 3×20nm PC-RAM devices that were able to switch more than 500 times faster than Flash memory. These comparisons are being made with Flash cell direct write times (NAND ~ milliseconds, NOR ~ microseconds), rather than the speeds available with parallel architectures. Flash data writing rates can go above 10MB/s with parallel architectures. PC-RAM is a true random-access memory that does not need to be erased first, unlike Flash.

Power consumption for the writing operation was also less than 50% that of Flash. The device size is equivalent to that targeted for Flash in 2015 on the industry roadmap (22nm node).

Javascript tutorial step by step – A beginners guide

Javascript is a scripting language based on the concept of prototype-based programming. The language is best known for its use in websites as client-side JavaScript. JavaScript was originally developed by Brendan Eich of Netscape under the name Mocha, later LiveScript, and finally renamed to JavaScript.

JavaScript is a prototype-based scripting language with a syntax loosely based on C. Like C, the language has no input or output constructs of its own.

Why should a webpage author use JavaScript in addition to HTML?

* Javascript adds user interactivity.
* Javascript enhances visual displays.
* Javascript allows client-side user form validation.
* Javascript provides more seamless integration with user plug-ins.
* Javascript allows access to some system information that HTML does not.

Why would you want to learn to program in JavaScript when there are so many canned scripts available for cutting and pasting into your own pages. Here are a few good reasons:
* Sometimes you want to customize a canned program to make it unique.
* Some functions that you want to accomplish have not been written yet.
* Many scripts are browser-centric (notably MSIE) or out of date.
* JavaScript is cross-platform. You can write programs that work on Windows, MacIntosh and Linux systems.
* Application users do not have to bother with downloading a JavaScript application, they just access your webpage. And version control is simple as there is one active version — the one on your website.
* The JavaScript language syntax is similar to that of C and Java so it makes a great starting point on a programming career.
* No proprietary development system is required. A simple editor is all that you need to write Javascript code. A browser is all that is needed to run JavaScript.
* JavaScript code is open source and freely available.

This guide try to answer all of the above questions and it will teach javascript step by step.

PS3 first impression

It is not available in India. But it is launched in Japan. Japanese gamer Teruma Naito from Oda City was one of the lucky few to bag a PlayStation 3. Here he gives his impressions of launch day and his early experience with the console:
The news footage of more than 1,000 people lined up outside the first shop to sell the PS3 in Tokyo was phenomenal.

I have never seen anything like that before in Japan. Such was the competition that apparently people were going to the length of paying homeless people up to 10,000 yen (£45) to line up on their behalf

The PS3s internet capabilities are impressive. By using the analogue sticks to move the mouse pointer, I was pretty much able to do everything from view videos on YouTube, download photos and videos attached to my e-mails and even do on-line banking and complete a money transfer.

How Laptop or Notebook Batteries Work and Why They Explode

I have already pointed out about Laptop Battery Safety tips. Calvin Chu has posted some good basic information about how notebook batteries work and why they explode.

He explains how laptop or notebook battery works and what makes them to explode. From the article:

It’s fair to say each of us has an inner geek that thinks differently, so I’m going to try to explain batteries a couple of different ways. Basically, I’ll explain how batteries work from a high level, then, I’ll dissect my notebook batteries and show you how they tick. Along the way, I’ll go over care of batteries, and safety and longevity considerations.

Intel Quad-Core QX6700 Performance

ExtremeTech has published Performance for Intel’s newest quad core processor, the Core 2 Extreme Quad E6700. After running through the gauntlet of 3DMark and content creation tests, among others, the quad core CPU boasts impressive performance results, particularly in video and 3D tests. According to the article, video creators and 3D animation artists should probably start saving up.

From the article:
You can think of the QX6700 Quad as a pair of Core 2 E6700 dies built into one CPU package. The clock frequency and front-side-bus speed are the same. Both dies each have 4MB of L2 cache. The L2 cache is shared between the two cores on the same die, but not shared across dies. This really is very much a repeat of the original Intel Smithfield CPU, which paired two Pentium 4 dies into a single package and dubbed it a dual-core CPU.

CPU architects, marketers, and users can argue whether or not Kentsfield is a “true” quad core, but from the perspective of motherboards and software, it’s a quad-core CPU. You can even install Windows XP Home Edition, which only “sees” a single CPU socket, on a system with a QX6700, though that would be something of a waste.
