Lions live in groups that are called prides. 10 to 20 lions may live in a pride. Each pride has a home area that is called its territory. Lions do not allow strange animals to hunt in their territory. A territory can be as large as 260 square kilometres (100 square miles). Lions live for 25 years in captivity.

Lions do not have a den (home) where they would live for a long time. The mother moves around with the cubs.

What do Lions Eat?

Lions hunts many animals, for example, gnus (wildebeest) and antelopes, and eat a lot of meat. Male lions usually weigh 159 to 180 kilograms (350 to 400 pounds), but they can weigh more. It is the only cat with a mane.

The prey consists mainly of large mammals such as wildebeest, impalas, zebras, buffalo, and warthogs in Africa and nilgai, wild boar, and several deer species in India.

Occasionally, they take relatively small species such as Thomson’s Gazelle or springbok. Extensive statistics collected over various studies show that lions normally feed on mammals in the range 190–550 kg (420–1210 lb). Wildebeest rank at the top of peferred prey (making nearly half of the lion prey in the Serengeti) followed by zebra. Most adult hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, elephants, and smaller gazelles, impala, and other agile antelopes are generally excluded.

An adult lioness requires an average of about 5 kg (11 lb) of meat per day, a male about 7 kg (15.4 lb)

A video has been shot recording what no one knew occurred before-that lions are capable of taking down full grown elephants.

Lions are among the animal kingdom’s most brutal and efficient predators but no one had heard of them hunting elephants before. The BBC’s Natural History Unit decided to send a film crew to try to capture a hunt on film.

The lions hunt elephants because they have discovered that they can. The dry season has always been a desperate time for wildlife in northern Botswana. One year, perhaps, water, and therefore prey, was scarcer than ever and a small or weak elephant was killed in a moment of bold opportunism. Then there was no turning back.

  9. If anyone would like to see an incredible story, a true story, check out Christian the Llon on YouTube. It’s the most incredible story I have EVER read. I bought the DVD and the book. The book was written by the two men who once owned Christian. I don’t want to say anything else and ruin the BEAUTIFUL story of this incredible lion.

Believe me, anyone who reads the book and/or watches the DVD won’t regret it. If any of you are animal lovers, the story will TRULY touch your lives, for the rest of your lives. It has mine.

  17. male lions are not as fast or agile as a female because of their build, plus the mane prevents camouflage. but when the females hunt, the males babysit the cubs. and even tho males eat first, they often let the cubs eat with them while the females wait. males actually have a harder life than females. when a male lion is 3 years old, he is kicked out of his pride, and he has to take over another pride by either killing that pride’s male or forcing him to abandon his pride. this is not easy. and wants the male has his pride, he will have to defend it against intruding males for the rest of his life, or until his old and weak and cannot fight intruding males and must abandon his pride. the average male lion rarely lives for twelve years in the wild, while females typically live for fifteen years in the wild.

  18. all these lion are getting me scard because look thet eating these other animals once i was reading this story and they that they called the lion yhe king of the jungle and when the lion raw and the rest of animals did not arive he will have them 4 lunch and that is what get me scard

  19. becasue there better at it, and the mane of a male dosnt allow them to hide well from their prey, it gives them away

  20. The female lions hunt because the male fights the other males off so the females hunt to kinda repaay him and because the male is to lazy to get his own food

  21. Not neccesarily true because other animals can over power them, yet you can only say their the king of beasts because that’s true.

  22. hey the loins are so cute . we did you guys find all of these different types of species . we hope they are otay yup

  23. male lions are responsible for protecting the family from intruders, especially intruding males who want to take over his family. also, when the females hunt, the males babysit their cubs. it’s a misconception that male lions kill their cubs. they will kill another male lion’s cubs, but they are ferociously protective of their own cubs.

  24. To those debating on why lioness’s do the hunting, the male lion needs to concerve energy incase he is attacked by other rogue males looking to take over his pride, they do occassionally hunt with the females particularly if the animal being hunted is harder to kill and needs the weight of the male lion to bring it down.

  25. because male lions stay behind and watch the cubs and protect there cubs and the place were thay live

  26. coz males mane don’t allow camouflage and male are built so strength not agility and speed.while females are gone males look after the cubs and protect the pride.when females are away nomadic males have a bigger chance of capturing the pride.although females typically don’t fight the nomads coz they don stand a chance. they get aggressive to protect their cubs,( nomads kill the cubs in order for their genes to go on but sometimes cubs are spared)and attack a little. so when females are not around they can kill the cubs and beat the males.and um MALES ARE NOT LAZY. they live a harder life than females.

  27. Why do you think God doesn’t exist? If God doesn’t exists, Please kindly explain how this world started???
