Human race will split into an attractive intelligent and ugly goblin-like creatures

The human race will one day split into two separate species, an attractive, intelligent ruling elite and an underclass of dim-witted, ugly goblin-like creatures, according to a top scientist.

100,000 years into the future, sexual selection will mean that two distinct breeds of human will have developed. The alarming prediction comes from evolutionary theorist Oliver Curry from the London School of Economics, who says that the human race will have reached its physical peak by the year 3000.

How to: Enable IMAP support in GMAIL

I hate POP3 as I routinely check my e-mail using multiple computers / devices such as mobile / pda etc.

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), lets you download messages from Gmail’s servers onto your computer so you can access your mail with a program like Microsoft Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird or Apple Mail, even when you aren’t connected to the Internet.

IMAP creates a constant connection between mail clients (desktop and/or mobile) and Gmail. Unlike POP, IMAP offers two-way communication between your web Gmail and your email client(s). This means when you log in to Gmail using a web browser, actions you perform on email clients and mobile devices (ex: putting mail in a ‘work’ folder) will instantly and automatically appear in Gmail (ex: it will already have a ‘work’ label on that email).

In addition, IMAP provides a better method to access your mail from multiple devices. If you check your email at work, on your mobile phone, and again at home, IMAP ensures that new mail is accessible from any device at any given time.

Finally, IMAP offers a more stable experience overall. Whereas POP is prone to losing messages or downloading the same messages multiple times, IMAP avoids this through its two-way syncing capabilities between your mail clients and your web Gmail.

If you’re trying to decide between using POP and using IMAP with your Gmail account, Google recommend IMAP.

How do I enable GMAIL IMAP?

To enable IMAP in your Gmail account:

  1. Log in to your Gmail account.
  2. Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
  3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  4. Select Enable IMAP.

Verisign to sell DNS root server lookup data (whois lookup data)

I recently did a search for a domain on GoDaddy, the domain was available. Week later when I went to buy it, it was not available and had been bought by some firm in UK. The name was unique and there is no way anybody can guess it (untile and unless GoDaddy give out data). My point it if you found a good name just register it. According to this article:

Verisign, the operator of the generic TLDs .COM & .NET registry, is considering selling access to selected root dns server lookup data to registrars. The root servers are what make domain names work on the Internet, meaning that many domain queries hit these servers on their way to a site or an email recipient.

Gliese 581 c is Second Earth Like Planet found 20 light years away

I was so excited to hear about this discovery. This is really a good news as it is the first planet beyond our solar system that may contain water, and therefore life, was detected by a team of European astronomers.

Scientists have discovered a warm and rocky “second Earth” circling a star, a find they believe dramatically boosts the prospects that we are not alone.

The planet is the most Earth-like ever spotted and is thought to have perfect conditions for water, an essential ingredient for life. Researchers detected the planet orbiting one of Earth’s nearest stars, a cool red dwarf called Gliese 581, 20 light years away in the constellation of Libra.

Now the million dollar question – is there life on Gliese 581 c? Nobody has the answer, but it is the closest we’ve come to finding a planet capable of supporting life outside our own solar system.

The Global Positioning System aka GPS is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). It enables a GPS receiver to determine its location, speed/direction, and time. Now Mobile phone maker Samsung said on Tuesday it would launch its first-ever phone incorporating a Global Positioning System (GPS). The phone — called the i550 — will use the operating software of Britain’s Symbian and be available in Europe from November this year.

Humans could marry robots within the century

This may sound little odd but it could be a possibility.. from Live Science website:

My forecast is that around 2050, the state of Massachusetts will be the first jurisdiction to legalize marriages with robots,” artificial intelligence researcher David Levy at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands told LiveScience. Levy recently completed his Ph.D. work on the subject of human-robot relationships, covering many of the privileges and practices that generally come with marriage as well as outside of it.

I’m just wondering about emotional communication in such marriage. I strongly believe one can build great relationships with emotions. Let us wait and see.

How does it feel to die?

It is true that death and life is not controlled by humans. Someone always take care of this issue. However, death is a mystery, only truly solved in your final moments, but Anna Gosline offers some macabre insights. This is brilliant read:

If there is one thing we can be certain of in life, it’s that eventually we will die – that is, we will no longer be alive. Sadly we are not completely certain what “being dead” means: defining death is much more complicated than it appears, and it’s getting harder to define all the time.

As recently as a century ago, it was priests not doctors who declared a person dead. When in doubt, they looked for signs of putrefaction. As medicine advanced, however, it became apparent that death was not an event, but a process.

Even so, for practical purposes an arbitrary line had to be drawn. First it was taken as the heart stopping. Then came the notion of brain death and in the 1960’s this seemed like the way forward. For a while it was even considered foolproof: once activity ceases in the brain and brainstem you can never regain consciousness, and without intervention the body will quickly shut down.

But foolproof it is not and the fact that several hundred neurologists and philosophers are gathering next May for the fifth International Symposium on the Definition of Death shows this only too well.
