Free Fast Public DNS Servers List

The most basic task of DNS is to translate hostnames such as theos.in to IP address such as 74.86.49.131. In very simple terms, it can be compared to a phone book. DNS also has other important use such as email routing.

This is my list of better, fast public dns servers and free dns server (as compare to your ISP / DSL / ADSL / cable DNS service providers dns servers). These dns servers are free to all. I was able to improve my browsing speed with following DNS servers. Use any one of the following provider.

  4. To all thoose who have posted 4.2.2.* addresses:

These are ROOT name servers and shouldn’t be queried unless by a DNS server. For more info google root-servers and you will soon find why this is bad for you and bad for them.

  5. Chuck,

I just checked my named.root file and 4.2.2.* are not ROOT name servers IP. You are safe to use them. Also most DNS server don’t act as recursive name server.

  6. Yooowwwww!! works fantastic!! the 4.2.2.1 is extremely fast!!

and to Chuck N., the use of top level dns servers for the sake of resolving names only will not affect since you’re only querying names and the server resolves it for you, nothing else and nothing illegal or harmful whatsoever…

  7. Dnsserver list just changed their listing to about 1000 dns servers, with real time QRTT times, and now a downloadable beta tool that will configure you DNS servers by your schedule to the current fastest DNS servers.

  8. I have a Reliance Broadband connection, and they have a DNS proxy, so even if I set my PC to use OpenDNS etc, they just intercept the query. During office hours when their proxy is heavily loaded, I can’t use the net, all DNS queries timeout.
Is there any way to solve this problem ?

    You can try use nslookup:
    nslookup http://www.com 4.2.2.2
where http://www.com – any host and 4.2.2.2 – testing name server IP or name. If server work and resolve names you will see answer like this:

    C:\Users\RU>nslookup http://www.com 4.2.2.2
    Server: vnsc-bak.sys.gtei.net
    Address: 4.2.2.2

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: http://www.com
    Address: 174.142.8.58

And if server is not work right an answer will be:

    C:\Users\RU>nslookup http://www.com 4.2.2.10

  30. Recently I programmed my router to use public DNS servers to get my ISP out of the business of intercepting my DNS activity. But I am still seeing a few delays, “looking up http:/…”

Is there any merit in finding and using DNS servers that are geographically closer to my location? (I’ve seen download displays where the server location is noted, suggesting you should pick one that’s closer.)

If a closer DNS server makes sense, how does one find the geographic location of a given server?

    thanks

“Nothing works, can someone tell me HOW to set up intenet? i have with no filters but i cant setup internet, i tried most of DNS here but nothing works. Please advise.”

Check your mail box for a fresh DVD of the Internet. Mine comes semiannually, but your Internet DVD regularity may depend on your subscription plan. Did you call ICANN and check that your Internet subscription is active? Also try cleaning your old Internet DVD. It may be stale, but it’s something. Good luck.

  33. I’ve been trying to connect to quicken.com (and associated sites like intuit.com) and for almost a year, I have failed — no ping, no browser access, and so on. Today I tried tracert and found that after about 20 hops it starts getting timeouts. I guess somewhere along the line smething is failing,

Is this a problem with my DNS server or with somebody else’s DNS server or is it something else? I am at my wit’s end since I cannot even connect to Quicken’s support mechanism. Other people don’t seem to have the problem — google for example claims that it is caching quicken.intuit.com successfully!

    Cheers,

  34. Quick check tells me that quicken.com and intuit.com are dropping ICMP packets (Ping requests) which means that hop twenty where you start to get time-outs is probably their router.

If I punch their URL into my web-browser it comes up without issue, what feedback do you get when you try to go directly to the website in question? (400/500 type error? Redirect? etc.)

It’s unlikely to be an issue with your DNS servers unless your DNS servers are hosting an incorrect/old record.

  35. I am using a linksys router and trying to change settings to use public dns. I cannot ping anything when I use any of these public dns numbers. Is there some extra setting on the router to access these? Otherwise, my comcast modem keeps directing me to their service site, so, I have internet connection is there, just can’t get around comcast.

  36. Hi ,
Could you email me the list of DNS address for USA internet service providers ,Please, Iam a student doing a project on DNS servers

  37. Remember that nothing is free – all these DNS servers, especially Google, will keep all your search history, IP address, timestamp, computer name, userid, etc – all stats on you and everything you search – forever in their database.

  38. US DNS:
    68.6.16.30
    68.8.16.30
    68.4.16.30

    OpenDNS:
    208.67.220.220
    208.67.222.220
    208.67.222.222

Google DNS too low with me in Vietnam.

  39. @ Brad Peabody : Thanks for posting the new Level 3 resolvers.
@ Vivek Gite : According to DNS Benchmark, the 4.2.2.* servers are owned by Level 3 Communications (www.level3.com). These are owned by NTT America (www.nttamerica.com) and might be interesting too :
    129.250.35.250
    129.250.35.251

  40. Switch Now!

It’s quick and easy to change to Comodo Secure DNS. No downloads and it’s absolutely free.

    156.154.70.22
    156.154.71.22

  41. until today I used it as well. Then I had to do a translation of a word and tried to use google’s language tools. OpenDNS blocked the site. Switched my router back to the ISP’s DNS and it worked fine. – So that’s why I’m here – in search for a new DNS server.

  42. Also, DynDNS servers are reliable . . . not sure why they’re not on your primary list or in any of the extensive comments thus far:

    216.146.35.35
    216.146.36.36

I believe OpenDNS was recently acquired by DynDNS, and my guess is the safety filter lists will be consolidated somehow.

  43. c:\nslookup 156.xxx.xxx.xxx (DNS Server IP address) you should get a DNS Server Name back with the IP address you query.

  44. is it OK to use other ISP DNS servers services provide in my local country which i didn’t pay for ?

  45. Thanks, never heard about ScrubIt and DNSadvantage, I changed my computer settings to these nameservers: 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3. All the best.

  46. Thank you so much. I use google now, but maybe there’s a chance to use the rest.

  47. I just did a test with over 150 name lookups to a large number of known public DNS servers. I tested both cached and uncached as well as invalid domains. Your results may vary, but this is what I found.

Google’s DNS server where among the slowest in the group. Lookups took almost twice as long to resolve as OpenDNS.

OpenDNS servers led the pack. In fact there was only one group of DNS servers that were faster.

Time Warner Telecomm has the fasted servers hands down.
    64.129.67.101
    64.129.67.102
    64.129.67.103

I use OpenDNS because I have a paid account and use the multiple tracked networks and the dashboard. I also use customized branded search pages for the invalid lookups and content filtering for the Ad networks and Phishing.

If you don’t want or need these advanced features and you just want standard errors returned for invalid lookups, Time Warner does not mess with the responses and would make an excellent choice.

  48. you all need to go to http://www.grc.com and download a free program called DNS Benchmark which will test for the fastest free DNS available. Free DNS speeds and their reliability vary daily. A fast one today might be a slow one tomorrow. A live one today might be dead tomorrow. And so on.
I use DNS Benchmark once per week, sometimes more if my computer starts to act slow. It is usually the DNS.

  49. Hey John C. Reid is Totally Right…This Is one of the fastest web-browsing experiences iHave ever seen…This DNS server is by-far way faster then the rest..THANK YOU John C. Reid for letting me know about this…iAm so happy :-)

  50. Correct;

Time Warner Telecomm has the fasted servers hands down.
    64.129.67.101
    64.129.67.102
    64.129.67.103

I have tried these on my servers and i think they offer the best result so far.

  51. Thanks for the info.I tried Google Dns Server a few days ago,but i noticed some problems with it,sometimes web pages cannot be loaded.and sometimes very slow.I tried Scrub-it,and for now I liked it very much.

  52. Yes U r Right. But to Find The best DNS server of your area . You should use Namebench a FREEWARE

  53. Like said by someone in a previous post, yesterday’s fast server is today’s slow one.Today I found that Scrub-it is not fast(I have said in my previous post that Scrub-it was that for that moment)

  54. You want to check out ScrubIt before adding them to your list. They filter out domains linked to pornography etc. according to their site. If you’re writing about public dns services you may want to mention that so that everyone can make an informed decision. I’m not too hot on Chinese democracy via DNS.

  55. very nice for share the Information ……………………………….

  56. Pinging Time Warner Telecomm servers led to the following results (where most others vary from 9 to 25ms)
    64.129.67.101 4 * time-out

  57. Anyone using free dns or any other free/pay service should be reading the Terms/Use policy. It’s not the responsibility of the OP to do so.
If they came here stupid, you can bet they’ll be leaving just as stupid.

  73. Is google DNS is really fast.
but I am feeling them slower then my ISP DNS.

  74. Thanks for the list. Google DNS helped me a lot when my ISP DNS were down a whole evening !

  75. do we have to choose primary AND secondary IP from the same DNS or can we mix and match two different primary (for example mixing google and dnsadvantage 8.8.8.8 and 156.154.70.1)??? or would this be slower???

    thannksx

  76. Like ‘Rd’ post, when I too first found the google open dns, it seemed super fast. but not so much anymore.

  77. You can use any of them you want, depending on your operating system you could even use all of them, but I would recommend against that. I would tend to use the ones my ISP gives me, and then maybe one of the others.

    Hope that helps :)

  78. namebench is a good product !! now my internet connection is faster than before.. hahaha.. thank you guys !

  79. i have been looking around for a philippine open DNS server but havent found one…or anything i can use maybe coz my connection is super slow…thank you and id appreciate any help…

    Reply from 208.67.222.222: bytes=32 time=254ms TTL=51
    ping 4.2.2.1
    Reply from 4.2.2.1: bytes=32 time=234ms TTL=54

  83. Are free DNS trustful? I don’t speak about time response and availability of service, but about monitoring and saving logs of urls of each user to use them illegaly (sale of logs, privacity, etc)

  84. Thx, first i used the open dns one but after a month or to it was really slow, now im on the google one

  85. Ping statistics for 4.2.2.5:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 12ms, Maximum = 12ms, Average = 12ms

    Rgds/

  95. DNS 4.2.2.5
    alt Dns 4.2.2.2
Works good for me! I live in Michigan and this was the fastest one. If anyone else knows of a faster DNS for Michigan please let me know thanks :)

  96. LOL norton is extremely safe ! I can surf all over the world without be afraid with virus or malware.. and google DNS is extremely fast !

  97. hi, i am using ntc gprs in nepal bt its speed is to slow . . .how can it b fast using DNS . . . .will it be secure for mobile. . ? . . Plz email me. . . .

  98. I have been working as a network security for the government for the last 17 years and so far, I still not feeling very comfortable with any form of bundle.
For example, at home I have a router and then a firewall. Then antivirus on computers. If I get a DNS that is also a firewall and all that, then I will endup with redundant services that are translated into slowness because a packet must be canalized by one firewall after another.
Today’s Internet is faster than as it was 10-15 years ago, I remember that a single T1 (1.544Mb/s) was more than enough for a large business. Now, with 22MB/s on my home internet connection it is fast as the T1 was few years ago. Why it is that?
All ISPs and search engines are now collecting information about traffic and that information is used later for marketing, law enforcement etc. Almost every TCP/IP port is blocked by ISPs to prevent people from having their own web site and mail server so the email and information can be controlled easier from the top and in order for that to happen, they have to employ several firewalls, many are hidden by IP Tunel and some others are advertised as a features
DNS information is managed and collected too, this is how some web sites from other countries are just not available from US but the information was very useful to get sexual predators etc
After all these years, the amount of spam, child pornography and internet fraud is bigger than 10 years ago so what was the goal?
Obviously the goal is control and surveillance – I am not worry about the FBI or CIA, they are good with protecting data and if the information were collected and manage just for them, the slowness would be minimum. I am worry about marketing and other things who keep data unprotected and available to spammers etc
If you want to know where customers go so you can design a marketing strategy, the DNS is the best place for you a packet came from computer A to computer B. Now put that on a database and select everybody who is coming to computer B and it is located in the US. Computer B is the Washington Post then I can buy stocks on it and publish add in there
I am not aware of any DNS or ISP who doesnt collect and manage data and connections but the one who do that on a very fast way is 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2
So, if the goal is speed, you will have a better luck with these two

  99. anyone could help me what is the best DNS here in Phils i try all of the said DNS but when pinging it oftens request time out…:(

    •2001:4860:4860::8888
    •2001:4860:4860::8844

  103. Hi
I live in bangladesh, can anyone suggest me a great DNS server which can help in fastest browsing

  104. You all should use google namebench to find best server for your broadband and put them as:

    DNS1 : The fastest server
    DNS2 : Second fastest server
DNS : Use your own ISP DNS (incase if DNS1 and DNS2 servers are down).

    Thanks – Hope this helps.

  105. Hi
I live in Indonesia, can anyone suggest me a great DNS server which can help in fastest browsing?

  106. 75.75.76.76 anycast works, but only if you’re on Comcast. It invariably works much better than the ones your comcast modem gets from it’s upstream headend.

I recommend using Google Namebench to compare all of these DNS servers lookup times, and not just ping times, as different networks get different DNS resolution times.

A server can have a great ping time but still be unreliable or slow at DNS lookups.

  107. There’s a little secret to fast dns server.

Look at the the whois records for the largest isp’s in your country.

Then attempt to to nslookups with each of them.

You’ll find one’s that are very fast and don’t have aren’t nearly as heavily used as the public and easy to use remember ones.

  108. The DNS riddle, is what is the best way to point a domain to a web host? You create a name server, that point to specific IP adress, correct?

So how does saying using an IP adress like Google’s 8.8.8.8 get your domain to point to the IP adress of the host?

  109. It is preference to try it out, and we can experience another extraordinary faster loading , Thanks

  110. I’ve been using google’s and openDNS.. works fine. Perhaps you can use your internet service provider dns as last option

  111. Yes, absolutely true. I’ve tried Google DNS but later did I realize that not switching to OpenDNS was a mistake.

  112. opendns is the best i have ever used since i was a kid, but hate them now and they provide colleges with options to block websites.

  113. HEY, i am living in USA and i have a playstion 3.. and when i try to get online it either says .. “the attempt to obtain the IP adress timed out” .. or ” DNS error 80710102 or something like that… now when i try to make my adress settings all automatic it says IP adress timed out/… then when i go to custom, wirless and all that i go to manual on adress settings and i type my IP adress and all that stuff… when i test my connection it says “IP adress succeded but there is a DNS error 80710102.. NOW WHEN THAT HAPPENS I WANT TO KILL SOMEBODY… NOW ALL I AM ASKING IS FOR SOMEONE TO HELP ME OUT WITH THIS…

    Thanks,
    A VERY pissed gamer… ^_^

  125. the best way (not why) to find which one is the best open run open cmd and ping one by one the best one is which one has the least (not list) ping time for example the best one for me is 4.2.2.1 (but I use my own win server dns server)

  126. That will be kinda hard because I use to live at the philipines too,you tube there is very bad it buffers too much and gets kinda annoying.

  127. In my opinion google dns is the best dns, where in you can use it across the globe.

  128. Hey guys I found these DNS servers
Its airtel broadband dns servers but it works for me

    202.56.215.55

  129. I am living in Nigeria and am using MTN. Please could give me DNS servers I can you. Thank you for your efforts.

  130. Hello Guys,
i was using my ISP dns server but due to problems in resloving certain website especially apple.com and others, i hve now result to using open or public dns.
I want to know is there is any security issue using public dns.
    Please advice.
    Thnkz.

  131. That’s a misguided perspective. Just because you’re looking up WHOIS on an ISP’s domain name (and most if not all ISPs have many domain names) doesn’t mean the authoritative nameservers for the domain name are public. Nor are an ISP’s DNS servers provided for customer use likely to be the same as those which are listed as authoritative for whatever domain name you might associate with the ISP.

  132. I concur. Google DNS is great for 2 reasons:
    1) very fast, consistent, and always sane acting (respect TTLs, etc).
    2) if a name isn’t found it responds properly with an NXDOMAIN rather than the IP of a webserver that tells you so. OpenDNS and many ISPs will do so, and it’s very annoying (apparently these people forgot that DNS is used for more than just HTTP!).

So I highly suggest Google DNS above all others. Especially those automatically provided by your ISP -typically, those are the worst.

  133. using this dns detail, and modem sim900d, how can i access many site and transfer data.?
    plz help me

  135. Google DNS resolved the slow browse n no browse issues and enhanced the browsing experienced also. Appreciated!

  136. Can anyone please suggest a Dns Server for me? I live in Oregon/California. Thanks in advance. :)

  137. Ok guys this will solve everything.
i wont post the link here as i dont know the rules but do a google search for:
    NAMEBENCH

it will looks for the FASTEST DNS server for YOUR connection.

    enjoy.

  138. To find the ‘fastest’ DNS server, I recommend that you give Google’s 20% project ‘namebench’ a try.

  139. There is no single best DNS server, it is often contingent upon your location and ISP… I suggest that you give Google’s 20% project ‘namebench’ a try, make sure to add as many DNS servers to the list as possible when testing.

  140. You are completely incorrect about that assertion. First, where did you get that information? Second, did you even use the application? Third, since it is obvious that you have not even tried the application before saying something so ridiculous, you would find that (Had you used the application, or even gone to the namebench website, http://code.google.com/p/namebench/) after completing the DNS benchmark, you would find that it includes many DIFFERENT DNS servers, such as OpenDNS, AT&T’s DNS (Now Verizon I believe), UltraDNS, DynDNS, Sprint, izoom, etc. etc.

So next time, I strongly urge you to do research, otherwise you are simply spreading misinformation that is not at all helpful to anyone. It just takes a little bit of effort to help others, I am really disappointed that a person might do something that is the exact opposite of helping.

I do apologize for being so brash, but I put a lot of effort into helping others, and when I find someone doing the exact opposite, it is thoroughly disappointing. I mean, if you do not know something, simply refrain from commenting… Right?

  141. Hi
i leave in South Africa and using Telkom internet ADSL, i need to know the fastest DNS setting for quick buffering and downloads, esp Youtube

  142. Let me know how can I check the history of my hosts free of cost. I will be very much thankful for this.

  143. First, I’d like to Vivek Gite for the list of public name resolvers.

I was using Google, but today they are returning bad data for al Jazeera:

I've also heard Google does not honor the TTL (time to live) specified by domain owners, which means Google would be slow to update changes. This sacrifices accuracy for speed. Of course, their getting it completely wrong, as above, is a different error.

So, I switched to Level 3 (shown as GTEI in the list here). Much better. I'm in the USA, so there may be better choices elsewhere. You can use traceroute to check the locations of the servers you get from your particular site…
