Google earth images created storm across India

by Vivek Gite · 110 comments

Legally you are not allowed to take photos or visit military installation. However google's earth allows to have eye on India Air Force (IAF) yelahanka base, HAL factory, PM's house, parliament house other important location in country.
Googles new released images allows anyone to see all these important location. You can't see sensitive location such as white house, but here it is displaying all sensitive location.
Government of India announced inquiry, as result of this google earth site may be get blocked if order by government. Check out google earth india image of Rashtrapati Bhavan and yelahanka base below:

According to googlecommunity

India seems to have lost Kashmir to Pakistan on Google Earth. Yes, that is how the map shows India-Pakistan borders.. Kashmir, India does not exist, but Kashmir, Pakistan exists.. the international borders shown have completely carved out Kashmir from India". This is serious problem and remember Microsoft did same mistake and that cost them lot of money. Same thing can happen with Google.

You /can/ see the White House on Google Earth – why would you not be able to.

And surely an Indian ban on Google Earth and / or Google Maps would inconvenience only Indians? The rest of the world would still be able to see the images you’re concerned about.

Visit the location and view one of the oldest college in India, University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering(UVCE), Bangalore in Google Earth.

I think indian government should ban google to take all sensitive images related to defence and high political. This will be very dengerous for defence in future.

As for banning google is concerned.. Where will u ban it?? To indians?? There are better ways of dealing with security issues than banning a internet site. Also any terrorist who is not in india can still c this.. What if someone emails him the snapshots..So I dont think banning is what is required here.. There should be some controlled mechanism where the government can ask google to blackout certain sensitive areas.

Btw, I made a small app using google map .. for india..

This is strange.
You can’t see the Whitehouse on Google Maps, but you can on Google Earth.
Why?
Check it out on the Google Maps site and then in Google Earth.

Well one can appreciate the advances in Technology, but Google should act in a more responsible manner. These days, when nuclear technology is being proliferated with the connivance of governments, sensitive geographical informations as provided by google would only pour oil to burning fire.

As India already fears that one day even nuclear arsenal technology will fall into the hands of terrorists, easy availability of these kind of sensitive information would only aid them.

HI all,
I think, security is the open secrete and all of us as Indians must have in our blood to secure the nation. Google map is the tool and let everyone enjoy the diversity and richness of India. As Indians, we have to be together to save the motherland.

Google Earth did not show the Whitehouse and the KSC Launchpad 39A and B and also the pentagon etc… in the summer of 2005. Its only after summer 05 that we are able to see them . I remember to have seen blurred images of the same. Change in Policy ? Donno , But When I first saw the Rashtrapathi bavan the first thing I did was to checkout if White house was seen and I was Just surprised to see that, so was I when I could see KCS and pads 39A/B….strange are the ways of world and their openions …

YOU GUYS HAD 9/11 AND THAT BROUGHT SHIT OUT OF ALL AMERICANS. IMAGINE DOLING OUT SENSETIVE PICTURES ONLY TO ENABLE THE TERRORISTS PLAN IN A MUCH BETTER WAY TO COMPLETELY ELIMINATE MANKIND. THE MANIACS AT GOOGLE EARTH SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PRE-PONING THE DOOMS DAY. MAY YOUR ENTIRE WEB SITE COLLAPSE IN THE WIDER INTERESTS OF THE EXISTENCE OF MANKIND.

I have lived in New Delhi for many years: people can walk in that area, take pictures in front of Rashtriyapati bhavan etc. Satellite pictures may provide additional information, but a terrorist needs to be in the area to attack it. So the goal of securing that place can be achieved by securing that area, not by blocking Google earth. Deprive millions of Indians of a tool that can make getting to places easier because the government is not confident of being able to secure stratergic areas? Should the US govt. blurr images of New York because terrorist might use it to attack New York? Or should it secure its borders and invest more on security agencies?

And about the air bases, Pakistan already has all that imagery about air bases.

It is not right to display photos of indian military areas and some high security…. govt. of INDIA should ban such illegal activities which causes security concern to our country.. a country which had fought many wars, in which we lost many of our brave guys….who gave their life for our country … it is like abusing their great soul… please take it off………

Well showing google images of installations is not dangerous at all.
All the defense bases of the US and UK governments are up there too.
Rather than keeeping strategy as a secret it should be showed to the general public generating a lot of feedback.
Its time for the Indian defense to grow than be paranoid.

I am totally disappointed by the comments of Indian President and other politicians. US Goverment has taken most of the high resolution imagery of US and released it to public domain. If you look in Livermore, California, you can clearly see one of the advanced nuclear laboratories, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Even White house is shown in both the Google earch and google maps. Most of US has much better resolution than indian images. If you are worried about the security ask the incapable police/intelligence machinery of India moving.

Images better than those avaliable at gogle earth are easily avaliable to anyone who can shell out 2 dollors i.e 82 rupees ,the quality google provides is easily avaliable free from other sites, goverment and private sat images are advanced enough to see people and their hair colour and these images are also avaliable,do you and the Indian govt. seriously belive blurring images of sites in india is gonna screw up the terrorist plans or that they actually rely on google earth when they have ascess to better detailed goverment images.

AS FAR AS I THINK. GOOGLE EARTH SHOULD NOT BE BANNED. BECAUSE IF WE THINK IN A POSITIVE WAY.THEN IT IS VERY USEFUL FOR
FOR THE PEOPLE. LIKE FOR THEIR STUDY PURPOSE.
AS THERE IS A QUESTION FOR SECURITY OF INDIA.THE SOLDIERS OF INDIA ARE ENOUGH FOR THE TERRORISTS…..
