Adding Google sitemap to blogger.com blog account

You can now add Google sitemap to your blogger.com account and increase your chances of being indexed in Google search engine result. You can add a Sitemap to your account to give Google more information about the pages in your site to help Google crawl them more effectively.

Step # 1: Login to sitemap account

At the top of screen you will see option to add site. Just paste URL of your blog (for example http://cyberciti.blogspot.com/)

sitemap

Click on Ok button. Next you will get confirmation message. Your site has been added to your account.

Step # 2: Now you need to verify your ownership of blog to view detailed statistics. Click on verify link. Google offers two methods of verification. You can either upload an HTML file with a name we specify (which is not possible with Google Blogger account), or you can add a META tag to your site’s index file. Adding META tag via template code is possible so just select Add a META tag from drop down menu:

sitemap

It will generate code for you, copy the meta tag and paste it into your blogger.com template section).

Step # 3: Go to your blogger.com and login to your account. Goto your blog > Click on Template
Paste the META tag code after section:

sitemap

Click on Save Template changes button

Click on Republish Index only button > Wait for few seconds so that your blog being published successfully.

Step # 4: Now goto sitemap account and click the box that read as follows:

I’ve added the META tag in the home page of http://cyberciti.blogspot.com/. Click on Verify button.

sitemap

Step # 5: Now your site is added to sitemap account and verification is done. Next you need to add actual sitemap url. Since blogger.com account don’t allow you to create a text file or anything else you need to add your site feed (ATOM xml) file as a site map. Click on add a sitemap link:

sitemap

Step # 6: You can add a Sitemap to your account to provide Google additional information about about your blog. Google will process your Sitemap and provide information on any errors in the Sitemaps tab as well your sitemap will be downloaded everyday to index your blog fast.
Select type as : Add General Web sitemap

Now you need to add Atom 0.3 feeds. Generally, you would use this format only if your site already has a syndication feed and this is the only way to add sitemap to your blogger.com account.

Paste url of your Atom feed: For example http://cyberciti.blogspot.com/atom.xml and click on Add Web sitemap:

Update: If you are using a new blogger beta system, use http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/full as a feed url.

sitemap
You will get confirmation:
You have added a Sitemap to http://cyberciti.blogspot.com/. Reports may take several hours to update. Thank you for your patience!

And you are done and your blog will be now index very fast (depend upon your posting and content).

  1. Thank you so much for these instructions — it’s exactly what I needed! I read somewhere else that the one major drawback with using the Blogspot XML Feed as the Sitemap URL is that only new pages will likely be submitted to the Sitemap, since the feeds are meant to send out new/recent blog data and not a complete map. However, until I figure out how to get my entire Blogger Blogspot properly sitemapped, your method is by far the best (and easiest) way I’ve found so far. — thanks again, Lucas Brachish

  2. Thanks, this helped a lot. I got stuck at uploading the xml file. I thought I had to add the one that google generated and couln’t figure out how to upload it. Now I know that blogger does not support it and I did the way you explained – easy!

  3. Thanks a lot.The Screenshots helped me a lot.I got really lost with the process and in no time I could thanks to you

  7. Thanks a million Mr Matata. :-)

I had the site added ok but was stuck at how to upload a sitemap. All good now.

  8. I don’t see any error …

Just republish entire blog. Make sure blog post title does not use any special character.

  9. I search throught the net for a long time how to add a sitemap to my blogspot. Thank you for your fast and easy solution!

  10. i sure do know this..its in google’s [?} when adding a sitemap, there are 3 options and syndication feed is an option but is very limited to newer posts only, actually 5 posts only!!!how is google not doing anything for blogger support of submitting sitemaps that are generated by 3rd party or even its sitemap generator instead???

  11. Hi,

Thanks very much for putting up such a helpful page.

But in your step #6, you mentioned that in order to submit the sitemap URL, I need to ensure that I have syndication feed. How do I do that and how would I know if I have syndication. By the way I am using Blogger Beta Version.

Hope to hear from you soon.

    Regards

  12. Hi NixCraft,

Many thanks for the answer. Managed to get part of the problem solved.

I’ve generated the sitemap for my blog but I do not know how to upload this xml file to the blogger account.

    Hope someone can assist.

  13. @Arun,

It takes some time; mean while keep posting on your blog and slowly google will accept you.

    @William,
This seems to be blogger beta software related problem. Sitemap only accept url if it is located at root. All you can do it send an email to blogger team about fixing this problem or use old blogger.com account.

  14. Hi
Thanks for this tutorial. I am beta Blogger user, and my feed: http://newsblogging.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/full.My problem: I got remark after Submit: “first add that site to your account and then click the Add a Sitemap link beside it.” That’s why I wrote my older feed: http://newsblogging.blogspot.com/atom.xml and after pending I got this: “Line:1 Incorrect namespace. Your Sitemap or Sitemap index file doesn’t properly declare the namespace.”
Please let me know what to do.
    Thanks very much.

  15. Thanks, this is the information that i was looking for. It would help a lot in my page ranking.

  19. Still having trouble with beta blogger sitemap. I tried both the rss.xml and the /posts/full methods. Both give me the same namespace, xml and other errors. Any solution to this?

  20. I’m having the same problem. rss.xml was working fine. Now, Google shows the error–File Not Found.

  21. If you’re using Blogger Beta where it says My Sitemap URL is: you will
need to add the rss.xml rss feed and not the atom feed.

    Ex: YOURNAME.Blogspot.com/rss.xml

  22. Thank you so much! I have been trying to figure this out for two weeks! Your instructions were so easy, even I could do it! (I am blonde after all *wink*)

  23. thanks so much! (k) i was looking to this info and this was the best and really comprehensive guide i ever found thanks so much

  24. Yeah, it’s working for me too. I just happened to notice that for once it wasn’t showing an error, so I added sitemaps to my other blogs and then on my two older ones (relatively) I noticed that the feed is only publishing the most recent 26 posts. Is there any way to fix that so it shows all of them or perhaps a hack that I can generate a full (i.e. accurate) sitemap like I want?

  25. Hi,Hakuna Matata Search,
    So much Thanks To You!!!
before I saw your post today, I’ve posted the following too many times:

Would you pls help me out? How could I add the sitemap for my blog?
    Really hoping can succeed it.
    Thanks so much!
    yours Binqiang Liu

However, now, after reading your above post,I do not have to post that for-help message any more!
    Thanks again!
    and good wishes!

  26. This does not work with the current Blogger Beta that has the atom feeds unders blogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/defaults

    http://moksh-orkut.blogspot.com

  28. Saurabh

You have only one post. Try to add more posts and content. Once done you will get indexed.

    Appreciate your post.

  29. Debtor! This tutorial one goes to help much people here in Brazil also.

Obs.: I do not know English very well, therefore I used the Google pre to write this. heheheh

  30. I have 200 posts in a blog, I used this method, now the old 150 posts, which was previously indexed in google are now not available in google’s index, as the feed sitemap dose not have those posts. can anyone help me on this. thanks.

  31. Hello There I seem to be struggling to add my sitemap Url to google. I tis the new blogger account. Can anyone help me please.?

  35. thx a lot…
    that all i need..
i was wasting my time to get this..
    lastly..

    thx again..

  36. Thanks a lot…that’s the exact information I was looking for. The steps are very simple and I found it awesome.

Thank you again for the information.

  37. Excellent post! I have been scratching my head about this whole sitemap thing for a couple of hours. As other comments have mentioned, Google’s help pages are not at all clear on this – they seem to be focussed on traditional web sites, rather than blogs. Keep up the great work.

  38. Hi,
As you already say, http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/ doesn´t work because google sitemaps requieres that the sitemap were located on the site root.

    http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/atom.xml
works fine, but it contains just the newer posts.

    I’ve realised that http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?max-results=1000
returns all the post of my site.

My question is, does anybody knows how to retrive all post using some url from the site’s root?

    TIA
    Christian

  39. Thank you for the infos! In spite the misinformation of the Google/Blogspot, bless to God there is this Blog givening us the tricks! I’m posting in portuguese in my blog the tip with the link to this blog.

  40. Dude. Thank you. This is exactly what I needed and I didn’t need to read any other site. This is a must for all newbie blogspot starterers (if that’s such a word)

  41. Yes, this is the easiest way to submit sitemap to Google if you do not have a site that hosted at an outside server. And bloggers can do this by submitting the atom or rss xml files to Google (in fact just the address) so that your blogs will be indexed by much more chance at Google.
    Eg, we added:
    http://ideasandtipsplanet.blogspot.com/atom.xml
    http://ideasandtipsplanet.blogspot.com/rss.xml
to Google so that our blog http://ideasandtipsplanet.blogspot.com/ could be better indexed.
Notice we have two choices to do that (i.e. atom and rss xml files, which are 2 popular feed format on internet), and Rss sometimes seems to be better.

Keep an eye on the following 2 sites or blogs or wikis to know what\’s going on about Google Index, Google Adsense and more:
    http://ideasandtipsplanet.blogspot.com/

  44. Your information saved me from many more hours of searching on the web. Thank you!

  45. It’s indeed a much needed information for blogspot users, because it seems really impossible to upload sitemap to the blogger account. Your tips has greatly helped me to add the sitemap with ease. Thank you very much!

  46. I am not sure if it helps, because usually the pages indexed by google for my blog get to lower numbers after submitting the SiteMap

  47. Thanks for the great instructions, very helpful screenshots! This will help anyone with a Blogger blog get better exposure and more traffic. I also have gotten great RSS results with Feedburner. I’d highly recommend your site to anyone who wants to know how to get better search engine results!

  48. Thank you for the tip I still wonder if the sitemap is not automatically created by blogger somewhere else.

  49. it was a really helpful information on site map .. i was wondering how to put site map in base directory

  50. Thanks for your good information.

  52. Same to me, I only able to add atom.xml. But I think it’s just works fine like that, isn’t it? Or, am I wrong? Any help? Thank you.

  53. Hello, this article is very much helpfull to me, but at the end in 6th step i got an error like..

The Sitemap must be located at http://richmediaadsindia.blogspot.com/. To add a Sitemap at http://richmediaadsindia.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/, first add that site to your account and then click the Add a Sitemap link beside it.

then i added that atom site to stemap site. then also i got this error.
plz help me to solve this and create a site map.

    thanks in advance.

  56. Lakshmi,

Yes, get a domain name and hosting account. It is quite cheap these days to get paid hosting account.

  57. Nice post.it’s very much useful for new blogger like mine. I was worried to submit site map at Google – it was required but i was blind about the techniques you mention here.If you have time please check my blog – Freelance Internet Marketing .

  59. wow. great infos i got here. i hoe you don’t mind me linking you to my blog.. hope you will also.. thanks!

  60. Great info – and a very interesting thread. Here’s a question for you people out there. I moved a blogger account over to my own server (so I’m publishing from within Blogger via FTP). As I have a pretty good archive, I’d like to get the older pages into the system as well. The Atom only registers the last five or so. What do you recommend?

  61. Looking for some promotion to the site i have build , if you can put input and review i will be glad to know what is going for my site

  62. Hi There
First off all i want to thank u for the valuable information you gave.

  64. I updated to the new layout blogspot.

I deleted my verification meta tag that I placed in my html code by mistake. How can I get it back in there?

    Thanks
    Sal

  65. Just wanted to add my thanks! Why on earth Blogger hasn’t included this in their ‘Help’ (nor even linked to your site) must remain a mystery ;)

In case anybody’s still lost: your blog template is in Layout -> Edit HTML.

  66. Thanks very much for this information. Me and a few friends who have blogs were having issues with google not listing our blogger stuff. I agree with a few of the other commenters, its daft that Google have not done this for you seeing as they own Blogger! U should talk to them.

    Helpful Hints and Tips

  67. Thanks, It saved my time, I was looking a way to upload sitemap.xml file in blogger.

  68. Just found out that also with using a new blogger account you have to use the atom.xml feed, which is formatted automatically out of the new feed.

  69. Thanks man! i did everything myself but got stuck with the actual URL entry, which is not located under the main directory and it didn’t let me.
there is no way of knowing you can just add /atom.xml

  70. Hi Hakuna Matata,

I am confused i can only see my blog listed in google when i type “site: myblogname.blogspot.com” (I can just see my blog only) and when i type “myblogname.blogspot.com” i cant see anything.

I want that my blog should be listed along with others how its possible or let me know if i am commiting any mistake.

I have added the sitemap as: http://myblogname.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false

or i should add http://myblogname.blogspot.com/atom.xml which one is ok please let me know.

How much times it takes to get the blog listed in google.

  71. I found your post straightforward and easy to follow tips on how to create sitemap with google. May I know some more of how we could add a sitemap page in our blogger account not only for search engine purpose as well as for the visitors viewpoint?

  72. Thanks, but I found google only indexed a few pages of my blog. in atom.xml, there is no full list of blog. What atom.xml does? It is different from sitemal.xml. Right?

  73. I don’t think this is the true sitemap. Is it an RSS feed right? Actually, google n Yahoo! have the standar sitemap (xml). You can see my sitemap as example, in http://www.iroel.web.id/sitemap.xml. Unfortunately, I use wordpress. I’ve search a tutorial for adding sitemap for blogger.com, but I’ve got nothing. I’m so sorry for my useless comment. But I’m sure that this is not true sitemap, it’s just an RSS.

  74. thanks for the such wonderful tips to index a blog quickly,,it will help many blogger to crawl their blog fast as compare to other…..

but i wanna one more questions ???????

  81. Hey, thanks a lot, i would have never discover this by myself, now i can send blogs out there for free and test any market before investing money on it. thanks man great blog great post.

  82. Just a quick thanks for this awesome help and you clearly explained it in the most simplest but yet the most effective way of how to add a sitemap. Cheers to you!

  83. By default, atom.xml only contains 25 posts. If you want you increase the number of posts in your atom.xml, change your URL to:

    atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

This will give you 100 posts. I think blogger has a limit on the number of posts in your atom.xml file, but I am not sure what it is.

If you have more than 100 posts, simply add another URL to get the next batch:

    atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=101&max-results=200

I hope you get the idea.

  84. hi! im so lucky i found your site.. thanks for your post i now got a sitemap for my blog… thanks again… :)

  97. hello,
got a problem while implementing your words..I’ve got a blot at the address http://www.indiansmallcars.blogspot.com
when i add a general web sitemap an error appears as
    “Paths don’t match
We’ve detected that you submitted your Sitemap using a URL path that includes the www prefix (for instance, http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml). However, the URLs listed inside your Sitemap don’t use the www prefix (for instance, http://example.com/myfile.htm)”

Now waiting for google to crawl through…

  99. i have just done what u have said.
    i wonder if it works.
how’d i figure if it worked for me, as i am already on google.

  100. Hi folks,
At first i too scratched my head to find “HTTP error : 404 not found” whether i give atom.xml or rss.xml or others..
Later i found in the dashboard where i add the site names
both the below are added :
    justnareshbw.blogspot.com
    http://www.justnareshbw.blogspot.com

and i added meta tag for http://www.justnareshwb.blogspot.com and trying to add sitemap to it.. I really dont know how both are automatically added to dashboard.
So i added metatag for justnareshbw.blogspot.com and then tried to add sitemap by atom.xml and it was successful.

So guys please check if ur doing it for a wrong URL as both URL (one with WWW and one without ) will be added to ur dashboard automatically.

Also , when ur doing correctly box to be filled will come next to //XXXXXX.blogspot.com/
and if ur doing wrongly (for WWW URL) then you get box to be filled in the next line of //www.XXXXXX.blogspot.com/

    Hope this helps.

    http://justnareshbw.blogspot.com/

what should i do to successfully create site map
i will be very thankfull to you if you provide me full information about the above problem i had encountered

  104. Wanted to say “thank you” for your great step by step help with this. I can’t stand making edits to my template html, and would have been unable to complete this sitemap task tonight without your post! In fact, I’ve added it to my website under helpful “Blogger.com” how-to links.

    Thanks again,
    Annie T. Baxter

  105. Thank you for this information . I was wondering what sitemap could be . But after reading your “helpful” post I found is very easy.

    Again thank you :)
    Tc

  106. Thanks for your info. I am getting stuck though when it comes to where to add the meta tag as I cannot find the buttons you are mentioning? When I try to add to a new post it won’t let me. Please advise?

    Cheers,

  107. I’m having some trouble with my blog and feedburner. I’m using a
template and everything was great when I started. I uploaded a sitemap
to google using rss.xml and it was indexing on google and that worked
for a few days then suddenly I noticed google stopped indexing it so
after doing some research I changed my sitemap to rss.xml?
    redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100 and now I am getting a
404 error url not found. Is that just because the sitemap has not
finished processing? I am wondering if the sitemap is actually
processing or it is just sitting there because something is broken
because when I submitted it as rss.xml the process didn’t take long at
all. when I download the errors it shows this – URL,Linked
    From,Discovery Date
    http://americanlifeinthephilippines.blogspot.com/YOURLINKHERE,http://

    my blogger site is http://americanlifeinthephilippines.blogspot.com/
If you can help me figure out what I did wrong I would appreciate it.
    Thanks…

  108. I was wondering how to add a sitemap when blogger doesn’t allow uploading of files and I came across your article. If Google reads the feed and Blogger creates it then the sitemap update is fully automated, fantastic.

As search engines don’t like duplicated content I’ve also decided to set my Blogger – Settings – Site feed – Allow blog feeds setting to short.

Thanks for this article, it has saved me a lot of time, and left me more time to play great free games

for google i don’t know where to fill meta code can some one plz tell me full steps for this i don’t know the languages so plz help me frnds

  153. Very useful information. I have already submitted it. This post will be useful for many beginners.

  154. You would think that Blogger would simply add a settings page for entering the xml text of the Sitemap and then provide the URL for entering into the Webmaster Tools. The feed method doesn’t provide information about a page’s relative priority, change frequency, or last modified date.

  155. Hi !!
Very informative post. I have just started getting familiar with SEO and your turtorial has been very helpful.
    Thanks a lot
    Govind

  156. Nice share. As I turn to a custom domain, the new domain seems to be hardly indeyed by google. Thanks, I’ll try your tutorial.

  157. That is been very useful for all my blogs..thanks for sharing such a good idea with all of us.

  158. Thanks for the tutorial,
I believe the new blogger allows sync with webmaster tools where you don’t have to go through the whole meta process.
Enable webmaster tools from your dashboard.

  159. I’m not sure I follow, I don’t see where Google automatically picks up the sitemap for any of my blogs. What “dashboard” are you referencing?

  160. Thanks for the great tip. I don’t realise we can submit sitemap for blogger.com as well.

    Nice day

  161. how do i create a site map? You told me how to add it to google, bit i have no idea how to generate one.

    Best regards

  167. Thank you i had no idea how to have blogspot sitmaps to submit. I make alot of blogspot websites this should help geting index faster. Great job.

  168. I just tried using the method to insert a sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools. Let’s hope it will also work for me…

  169. Yes, having google sitemap / xml sitemap is the right way to increase visibility of your website to Google as well as to other Search Engines: Yahoo, Bing etc. To get xml sitemap you can can google for something like “Free Online XML Sitemap Generator” and find one that will work for you. Google’s main idea was to make web-sites more “Crawler-friendly” which would help search engines to do their indexing more effectively…

  170. I just want to say that it is a bit hard for the newbies to understand this post…. As far as i know sitemaps are used only if the pages are not indexed. And pages are not indexed either if the content is a stolen one or if the topic does not match the main keywords of the site. but definitely the content is useful in case the pages are not indexed properly. It is also a good SEO technique as recommended by Google………

  171. I found the instructions helpful.

My problem is that this url only shows that there are only 26 pages on my blogger blog while I know there are many more. Is this an error or there is another way to get all your pages indexed.

  172. Hi, nice post ! it has lot of information in this article i got more in few effort to reading this….now i can add something to my blog this is absolutely nice keep this on thanks.

  173. You can submit also a sitemap of the type rss.xml .What is the difference between atom and rss ?

  174. Perfect explanation. Thank you so much, exactly what I was looking for.

  175. Thanks for the info, very helpfull. Somethings not quite right because Google has recognised my pages submited, but hasnt indexed any…??? Hopefully this will happen over time.

  176. Thank you very much. I didn’t even know this was possible :) And excellent instructions, I didn’t have any trouble getting this set up.

  177. does this still work? the webmastertools have changed…

  178. Thanks, this really works! Google Sitemaps wasn’t indexing my old BlogSpot feed URL. But this one works just fine!

  179. Hi, I’ve got some problems submitting sitemap for my blogger account (.com domain, I think new beta system). feeds/posts/full seems to be unacceptable for webmaster tools because it is in HTML format… anyone can help?

  180. hi there. thanks for the info. i have tried ‘feeds/posts/default’ sitemap submission for my site but it didn’t work. what may seemed to be the problem here?

  181. Thanks, this really works! Google Sitemaps wasn’t indexing my old BlogSpot feed URL. But this one works just fine!

  182. I was so far never registered my blog on webmaster. to remind you of it. Much obliged.

  184. Thanks a lot i have been looking for blogger sitemap long long time but didn’t know its actually the Atom feeds url damn.

  185. Useful tutorial, I had no idea how could I add a sitemap to blogger blogs. Thanks for sharing this tutorial

  186. i created sitemap.xml file from online site map generator.how can i submit this in google.plz give me tha link

  187. I had to change my domain name and had to reconfigure site on Webmaster and the site map examples above only allows the latest 26 URL links on your blogger blog; i.e 26 posts. What happens when you have a blog with almost 200 published posts.

  188. Thanx a million. I had been bitting my nails for several hours to make this job done. But that update for beta version was really helpful. Thanx from the core of my heart.

  189. Hello. Newbie here.
Which of the two am i going to use?
The Atom or the RSS? Please guide me. Thanks.

  190. Thanks Vivek
    Its worth reading
I never used site map for my blogs but still they crawled successfully
    BTW its good to know

  191. Very nice article .A sitemap is really an important thing in SEO .Without a proper sitemap , a website can not get properly indexed in search engines and can’t generate traffic .So , besides other search engine optimisation process ,a webmaster should also think about building a proper sitemap .thnx for sharing such useful info .
